Gunung Pulai

2017 Oct. Gunung Pulai. Rainforest Treehouse Overnight Stay.

Overnight stay in a treehouse at Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest in Kulai, a short drive from Singapore approx 40min from JB Checkpoint. Really interesting back to basics experience staying in an aboriginal treehouse built from logs and branches, not planks. Very commendable effort to the people running the place and sharing with guests on environmental issues like deforestation, underground water, and effects of the spread of oil palm plantations. Highly recommended for families with young kids too.

Hokkaido – South Region

2017 Jun. Lake Toya. Hakodate. Niseko. Otaru. Sapporo.

It was a long drive again from Furano to Lake Toya, and we decided to take the scenic local road instead of the toll highways. Stopped briefly at the Chitose Outlet Mall for lunch, before arriving at the Lake View Toya Nanokaze Resort. Practical tip regarding toll roads, and whether or not to buy the  ETC per per use card or the unlimited use Hokkaido Expressway Pass (HEP). If you are short on travel time, the toll roads will get you to places much faster, my recommendation is to just buy the unlimited use pass, single toll trips are not cheap to begin with, so might as well go buffet style. But local road are definitely more scenic, so you will be missing out the views and charming towns along the way. Except for one long haul toll trip at the beginning, I took local roads throughout my entire trip.

Hokkaido – Central Region

2017 Jun. Asahikawa. Biei. Kamifurano. Furano.

After exploring the less travelled eastern region of Hokkaido, we moved on the more popular and frequently visited central region where the main attraction would be Furano/Biei. The drive from Kitami towards Asahikawa will pass by some scenic spots along Route 39, including  Ginga Falls 銀河瀑布.

Hokkaido – East Region

2017 Jun. Kushiro. Lake Akan. Higashimokoto. Shiretoko. Abashiri.

This is a highly anticipated self drive trip in Hokkaido to experience the beautiful countryside and eat the delicious seafood and dairy desserts I have been hearing about Hokkaido for years. Early June is not the typical tourists’ choice to visit, but it is the only window that fits my schedule, so I planned around to make the most out of it. This travel window should be useful to those with schooling children in Singapore, as it coincide with June holidays. My full itinerary is attached at the end this 3-part blog, in case you find the info useful as reference.

Hong Kong 2017

2017 Jun. Hong Kong

This was a special trip to commemorate our 30 years of friendship since we first met as 13 year old boys back in school. Scary how time flies, but with this bunch, the unspoken bond and shared frequency only gets stronger over the years. The trip itinerary is to eat and eat and eat and maybe shop a bit in between. Many places I’m blogging here do not need much introduction, as there are already famous and well known. There are also a few lesser known gems we tried, for sharing here. My blog is loosely organised based on location clusters. I usually like to stay near 中環 Central as there are a lot of good old eating places. So right after dropping off our bags, the feasting starts… Continue Reading

Siem Reap

2016 Dec. Angkor Wat. Tonle Sap.

Siem Reap is the primary gateway to visiting Angkor Archaeological Park, it is a major tourist town where you will find comfortable lodging, decent food, and entertainment. Angkor Wat is just a short 30min tuk tuk ride away. Not much planning is needed when visiting Angkor Wat. Depending on how much time you have, you can choose from the well established tour itineraries i.e. Little Circuit or Grand Circuit, outlying temples, etc. which every tuk tuk driver is very familiar with and happy to accommodate. Phnom Penh

2016 Dec. Phnom Penh. Cambodia.

Phnom Penh had always been a mysterious place in my impression, due to the Khmer Rouge regime when I was still a little boy. Much was heard about the atrocities done, the pain and sufferings experienced during that dark period. To be honest I wasn’t too keen to visit, but I went anyway. After seeing the actual sites and exhibits, I have no words to describe, other than saying it is a shocking, unforgettable, but necessary reflective lesson about humanity to be experienced and contemplated on your own… in silence.

宜蘭。

2016 Sep. Yilan.

从太鲁阁下山后,在花莲搭火车到宜蘭。又遇上了超可爱的火车。宜蘭是我回台北途中,经过稍作停留的最后一站。

Yilan is the last stop of my Taiwan round island tour. Known for its wonderful street food  and onsens, I only stopped over for a brief afternoon. I visited the garden by cartoonist Jimmy, ending my memorable and adventurous trip on a happy and whimsical none.

天祥。

2016 Sep. Taroko Gorge. Hualien.

Taroko Gorge is always a delightful place to be in, if you like some peaceful time to enjoy nature. Weather in the mountains amidst the greenery is usually cool and comfortable. Surrounded by gorgeous scenery, the calming sounds coming from the flowing streams in the valleys soothes and relaxes the mind. It is one of my favourite places in Taiwan, easily accessible by public bus from Hualien.
