台北。乌来。

2016 Aug. Taipei. Wulai.

Wulai is a place for hot springs about an hour away from Taipei City. It is a convenient and quick getaway from the city centre, and a direct public bus 849 will take you to the Old Street of Wulai, where you can enjoy the aboriginal cuisine, and the natural beauty of the forested hills and streams.

台湾。铁路单车环岛离岛。放逐solo行。

2016 Aug. Rail & Bike Travel Itinerary. Taiwan Island & Orchid Island.

Taiwan is one of my favorite travel destinations that I keep going back, again and again. The island is blessed with gorgeous natural landscapes, delicious local delicacies, convenient transportation, and very friendly people wherever you go. Traveling within Taiwan is easy and comfortable. Quality homestays in scenic areas are common and best of all, very budget friendly.

I decided to go on a more ambitious round-island solo backpacking trip via rail, bus, and my foldable bike this time. After spending a week in Taipei taking short trips nearby, I started my solo round island trip. The highlight of my itinerary is Orchid Island, an offshore  hard to get to island still inhabited by its native aboriginal residents, that retained much of it pristine natural beauty and tribal charm.

My following blog posts will share more pics and details of my month-long travel…

Penang. Malaysia.

2016 Jul. Georgetown. Gurney Drive. Air Itam.

Penang is THE street food and hawker fare paradise. There are so many famous and yummilicious stalls that you have to be strategic on your choices. There is only so much you can stuff into your stomach and you do not want to step on a landmine and waste space on mediocre food. Exploring the rich cultural heritage of Georgetown and the interesting street art by Ernest Zacharevic also made good exercise to burn off some calories to get yourself ready for the next meal. I love visiting Penang, and my itinerary is to eat, and eat, and maybe walk a little, so that I can eat again.

Most of the stalls I visited this time are already famous and need little introduction. You can find on the internet countless blogs and top 10 lists on what is the best. Here’s my take on what is so good that you have to hunt it down, and those that are worth trying if you happen to be nearby. Continue Reading

Krabi. Thailand.

2016 Jul. Aonang Beach in Krabi & Phi Phi Islands.

Phi Phi Islands in Krabi become famous after Leonardo Dicaprio’s movie The Beach, and is now a hugely popular beach destination. It was a spontaneous decision to go on a short lazy getaway to Krabi, as it is easily accessible and reasonable affordable from Singapore. Budget airline TigerAir has promotion and decent pricing if you book at the right time in advance. We chose to stay in Aonang, which is close to many shops and restaurants, and has easy access to island hopping.

Peru. Puerto Maldonado.

2013 Nov. Amazon Rainforest. Puerto Maldonado.

Day 1

Flew in to Puerto Maldonado from Cusco. We checked-in at the Butterfly House, then a 10 minute transfer to the Boarding Wharf for a 45-minute boat transfer along the river to our accommodation Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. I had always wanted to visit the amazon after seeing so many documentaries on National Geographic. Not knowing what to expect, I was so excited to be here in the amazon jungle!

Peru. Huayna Picchu.

2013 Nov. Huayna Picchu. Aguas Calientes.

After 4 days of trekking and camping without proper toilet and bathroom, being able to take a shower in the hotel finally in Aguas Calientes was such a welcomed luxury. Never felt so clean and refreshed, after being marinated in sweat and rain, infused with local wild herbs and sun-baked for 4 days. We had a happy celebration lunch with our wonderful guides and the bunch of awesome people who made the Inca Trail trek so fun and memorable.

A short boat ride from Puno, we arrive in Uros, which is a group of 44 or so artificial islands made of floating reeds (totora). The purpose of the island settlements was originally defensive, and if a threat arose they could be moved.

Peru. Colca Canyon.

2013 Nov. Colca Canyon.

Set off for our Colca Canyon tour by van, which was even more bumpy. As we were ascending in altitude, we bought some coca leaves to chew on along the way. I am taking drugs, how naughty and exciting! (coca leaves is a common altitude sickness remedy in Peru, but banned and illegal in Singapore). Colca Canyon, one of Peru’s top tourist destinations, is an area of astounding scenic beauty and best known as one of the world’s deepest canyons at 4,160m (13,640 feet).
